TRIAL: Redefining Japan’s Discount Retail Landscape with Innovation and Strategy
In recent years, a discount supermarket chain from Kyushu, TRIAL, has been rapidly transforming Japan’s retail sector. Situated just a 30-minute drive from central Sendai, along a main road in the countryside, the large blue storefront of the TRIAL Rifu store marks the growing presence of this retail powerhouse. On its grand opening day, around 400 eager customers lined up to enter the store, which features 200 parking spaces. TRIAL, founded in 1974, began as a second-hand shop in Fukuoka City but gradually expanded into the retail sector under the leadership of chairman Hisao Nagata. Inspired by Walmart’s operational model, Nagata shifted TRIAL’s focus to discount retailing in 1992, opening the company’s first discount store in Fukuoka Prefecture.
Since launching its “super center” format in 1996, combining groceries with household goods, TRIAL has steadily expanded across Japan, reaching over 300 stores by 2024. The company’s meteoric rise is the result of a strategic combination of low-price offerings, technological innovation, and nationwide expansion.
