The Current State of Bookstores and Cultural Shifts
In recent years, bookstores worldwide have faced significant challenges driven by the digital wave, altering the traditional role of brick-and-mortar shops. Book lovers lament the gradual disappearance of bookstores, with owners struggling to preserve the cultural and literary atmosphere. A recent example from Taiwan highlights the predicament faced by a bookstore in Dihua Street, where tourists treat the store as a resting spot, bringing in drinks, using restrooms without care, and leaving negative reviews. This behavior frustrates owners attempting to sustain cultural spaces.

However, do bookstores have to endure this helplessness? In Tokyo’s Roppongi district, a new business model is redefining bookstore operations. “Bunkitsu” is a bookstore that charges an entrance fee, restricting visitor flow and maintaining the quality of the reading environment. More accurately described as a “reading store” rather than a typical bookstore, Bunkitsu injects fresh vitality into the industry, prompting a reevaluation of the role and value of bookstores in contemporary society.
