The Japanese Diaspora: Embracing Global Opportunities in the Post-Pandemic Era
A Surge in Japanese Overseas Relocation
Since the easing of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2023, Japan has witnessed a significant trend known as “脱ニッポン” (Detaching from Japan), characterized by a large number of Japanese citizens moving abroad. This phenomenon is reflected in the statistics provided by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, which reported a net outflow of approximately 25,250 Japanese nationals in 2023 alone, indicating a growing inclination among the Japanese to seek opportunities beyond their national borders.
The Pull of the Global Stage
The allure of living and working overseas has grown stronger among Japanese citizens, especially in the aftermath of what has been termed as Japan’s “Lost 30 Years” following the burst of the economic bubble. Popular destinations for these expatriates include the United States, China, Australia, Canada, Thailand, and more recently, South Korea, Taiwan, and New Zealand. These countries offer expansive career opportunities and lifestyles that seem increasingly appealing compared to the relative stagnation many feel at home.
