Harajuku’s Animal Cafe Boom: A Trendy Oasis for Animal Lovers
From Fashion Hub to Animal Haven
Tokyo’s famous Takeshita Street in Harajuku, traditionally renowned for its youthful fashion and delightful desserts, is experiencing an intriguing transformation. Spanning just 350 meters from JR Harajuku Station’s Takeshita exit to Meiji Street, this vibrant corridor has recently become a hotspot for animal-themed cafes. These establishments, offering intimate interactions with adorable creatures, have drawn crowds of both local visitors and international tourists seeking unique cultural experiences.
A Diverse Animal Encounter at “Harajuku Kawaii Zoo”
Among these venues, the “Harajuku Kawaii Zoo” stands out for its extensive variety of animals. Visitors can enjoy hands-on experiences with five meerkats, two hedgehogs, two miniature porcupines, nine ferrets, a fennec fox, and since December 2024, a capybara. Priced attractively at just 1,540 yen for a 30-minute session, the zoo has become particularly popular among visitors captivated by social media’s “healing animals” trend. Brianna, a visitor from Chicago, USA, confessed to having explored over ten animal cafes during a single trip and expressed her intent to visit daily during her two-month stay.
