Forever Young: Osaka’s Senior Idol Group “Oba-chan” Defies Age
The Vibrant Street Performers of Osaka
In the bustling Shinsekai shopping street of Osaka, a lively group of elderly women clad in eye-catching leopard print attire captivate audiences monthly with their spirited performances. Known as “Oba-chan,” this unique idol group boasts an impressive average age of 72.5 years. Their name, derived from the affectionate Kansai dialect term “oba-san,” encapsulates the warmth and distinct charm of Osaka’s local culture. Since forming in 2011, Oba-chan has not only sustained their enthusiasm but remarkably grown more vibrant and engaging as their members age.
Captivating Audiences Rain or Shine
One rainy day in early May, Oba-chan held their regular monthly street performance. Despite the gloomy weather, the event attracted dozens of spectators, including young women and foreign tourists, who cheered the elderly idols with affectionate shouts of “Kawaii!” Their signature song, “Oba-chan no Theme,” instantly energized the audience with its catchy chorus of “Oba, Oba, Oba, Oba-chan,” prompting attendees to dance along spontaneously. Members frequently mingled with the crowd, sharing dances and conversations, creating a lively atmosphere reminiscent of a neighborhood festival.
